You will probably understand this more than I do because I took the time, years ago, to familiarise myself with the xtz660 gravel (the old one). I fell. I couldn't feel comfortable or learn anything if it was too hefty. I basically set it aside after a few trips before selling it. Maybe I've always refrained from becoming mushy because I remember how terribly my bones are fusing together.
